A magical cold desert with long winding roads and picturesque valleys and snow-crowned mountains, Spiti valley is a must visit place for any travel enthusiast to explore one's insignificance compared to the majesticity of the mountains. Intermittent greenery and picture-perfect villages welcome you when you set foot into Spiti Valley. Bordered on all sides by the Himalayas, Spiti Valley, located in Himachal Pradesh, has an altitude of 12,500 feet above sea level. It gets around 250 days of sunshine in the year, making it one of the coldest places in the country.
The valley and surrounding region is one of the least populated regions in India and is the gateway to the northernmost reaches of the nation. The term Spiti means 'The Middle Land', and the place is very appropriately named, as Spiti Valley separates India from Tibet.
Spiti valley is a research and cultural centre for Buddhists. Highlights include Key Monastery and Tabo Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in the world and a favourite of the Dalai Lama.
The mountain ropeway from Kibber to Chichum used to be a popular tourist attraction till a bridge was commissioned in 2017. The ropeway, which was operated manually, was built entirely by the locals to avoid walking the long uphill path between the two villages. Even though it was extremely dangerous and not for the faint hearted, it offered spectacular views of the gorge below, as well a bird’s eye view of the surrounding peaks. Currently, the same view can be experienced from the new bridge, without the risk.
The itinerary has been made specifically to show the majestic beauty of the mountains, and to let the travelers experience how remote and isolated these regions are. The trip lets you experience the lifestyle of the locals, and gives an insight to the hardships they face on a regular basis for survival, while the main perk of it all being the connect with nature that they have and the beauty all around them. The itinerary will surely connect you to these places, and make you come back for longer periods of time to stay and experience more of this beauty.
